hey fam,
Bashar offers a fascinating perspective on veganism & meat-eating here if anyone is curious:
Bashar on meat-eating
in short Bashar says some people’s bodies may simply authentically require meat to function ~reasonably well at this point in our planetary-evolutionary history
he also notes that plants may not like to be killed either. and he provides other interesting nuanced reflections
Peter Brown on meat-eating
and here is a characteristically iconoclastic perspective from our wily friend, Peter Brown:
“Exactly; but at some point you might want to have a hamburger, it might be what you need. It’s not like hamburgers are evil and health food is good; they’re both differing modes of the functioning of the universe. The universe produces both hamburgers and health food, so they’re both of course divine aspects of reality, interacting with all other aspects in accordance with the inherent patterning of reality. And that patterning is what moves you to choose one or the other; it’s all the doing of the inherent nature of things. The flow of events takes care of itself. But you don’t need to worry about having preferences in the flow of events, they ARE the flow, too, spontaneously manifesting itself. The universe does everything; “we” are just along for the ride, so to speak.”
Timothy Conway’s case against meat-eating
if you are curious to explore the strongest steelmanned case against meat-eating, i recommend reading Tim Conway’s essay on this here: https://www.enlightened-spirituality.org/foodfacts.html
some notes on my journey with meat-eating
my journey has generally led me toward eating a lot less meat than i used to — i was raised in a small-town Iowa culture where eating meat ~2-3 times per day is normal — yet i do still eat meat usually ~1-3 times/week or so
i don't personally subscribe to the idea that i'm 'eating death' when i eat meat and 'eating life' when i eat an apple, as some say — i find this dichotomy too stark / simplistic... in a primal/nondual sense, everything is made of pure aliveness
my body seems to tell me it benefits from some meat; it strongly asks for meat sometimes; many sources suggest that meat can be part of a healthy diet for many people
i’m reminded of Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston Price, which documents indigenous diets and basically shows that animal fats and organs were vital staples of health
i haven’t read the book but have heard many great things about it; it’s widely revered as a classic of nutritional literature. i believe
was influenced by Weston Price and is a good person to follow for related topicsthat said, who knows, maybe i'll stop eating it entirely at some point — we'll see... i don't like inadvertently contributing to animal suffering yet i also feel — similar to Peter — that reality itself has no inherent 'problem' with eating meat (or with anything), else it would not manifest such appearances...
if i visit a friend and he pulls a delicious sausage pizza out of the oven and offers me some, who am i to claim to know better than reality in that moment? the pizza is going to get eaten either way; perhaps it is more artful in that moment to simply adopt a "when in rome" attitude...
these are some of the ways i contemplate this question... i'm presently in a space of feeling a sense of peace about my eating habits / tendencies... i feel i eat healthier than probably ~90% of Americans generally (which may not be saying too much hah!)...
basically i'm at peace with who the JB-character happens to be... he's a funny fella, i enjoy journeying with him
and again, that said, i do love animals and have great compassion for them; i believe one can adore animals and still eat meat
i am inspired by those who advocate for animal rights; and i may entirely stop eating meat at some point — who knows... it's kinda hard to imagine but it could happen...
i trust the flow 🙏
love,
jordan
